After the set up policy, we are greeted by a short information screen and we need to continue the configuration process with the Next button.
To prepare exchange policies Mailboxes, Distribution List, Security Groups or Import CSV We can select our users who will be included in the policy using . (Scope does not yet automatically update the policy when new users are added.)
As we mentioned in the previous article, we can import 3000 users with Import CSV.
With the next step Review Exchange backup policy We come to the step and here we can examine a preview of the configuration and then Create Policy We can record our transactions with .
Policy updates typically take about 1.000 minutes to take effect for approximately 15 user mailboxes. You can view and manage Exchange user mailboxes and their policy status on the policy page.

We can complete the policy creation process with Create Policy.
As with Exchange, it can take up to 15 minutes for the policy created for OneDrive to take effect.
When we come to the Microsoft 365 Backup page, we can see the status of our resources. Since we have not created any policy for SharePoint, it appears as Not set up. Our policy for Exchange has been activated, and the process for OneDrive is ongoing.
Editing Microsoft 365 Backup Policies
Microsoft 365 Backup We may later edit or review any policy we create. Microsoft 365 Backup The policy making process is designed to be an easy and practical process, like policy making.

- With Included user mailboxes, we can include users or groups in the policy.
Exchange I added one mailboxes to my policy and after this process We need to wait a short while for the policy to become active again.
Microsoft 365 Backup Restore Process
So far, we have talked about the information and policy processes for Microsoft 365 Backup. Now we will perform the restore process from my active policies.
The Restore process you started on OneDrive or SharePoint will complete the process by overwriting the existing data.
In Exchange, the situation works a little differently; in the Exchange Online Restore process, filtering is more detailed and you can restore only the desired items or you can restore the entire mailbox under a different folder.
We need to follow the steps with the Microsoft 365 Backup – Restore button.
All you have to do is use the Restore button under the resource for which you want to start a Restore.
I continue with Exchange mailbox content from Select type of content.
In the User mailboxes to restore section, I select the account for which the restore operation will be made with “Add user mailboxes” and continue with the Next button.
Even though Microsoft 365 Backup is currently in preview, the Content scope section has very detailed filtering.
We need to enter filtering criteria for the account we have selected.
In the All emails, notes, contacts, calendars and task section;
- Timezone: We need to select the time zone we want to use and enter date/time.
- According to the information we have provided, the Restore process will perform a full restoration process.
Select content only In this section, we can make a more detailed filter and perform the restoration process according to the criteria we have given;
In the first section, we specify the time within which the search should be performed.
Email From: We need to enter the email sender's address.
Has Attachment: We need to specify whether the mail contains an attached file.
Subject has the keywords: We can specify the mail subject information.
Email To: We need to enter the address of the email recipient.
We can perform a search according to the criteria we have provided with the Find matching items button.
It found 1 mail item according to the criteria I gave below. If I continue in this way, the relevant restore process will only be performed for this Mail Item.
I am in my transactions All Emails I continue as and my filtering process is as follows
On the Select restore point screen, we select the account we will restore. On this screen, you can also perform Find another backup and Delete operations.
With Find another backup we can view or select other restore points for this account.
Or you can delete the relevant restore point with the Delete button.
The next section is Confirm restore points, here we need to confirm by selecting the account we will restore.
There are two options we need to choose on the Set destination screen;
- Restore In-Place: This option will restore the backup you selected onto the account.
- Restore to a new folder: This option creates a new folder in the form of “Recovery Items – Date” information and performs the restore operation in the relevant folder.
I continue by selecting Restore to a new folder and clicking the Next button, and then I continue my operations with the Restore Mailbox button.
Our Restore process has started on Microsoft 365 Backup.
In the Restoration tab on the Microsoft 365 Backup menu, we can view the tasks in progress of the restoration process. There is currently 1 active task running for Exchange.
When we hover over a running task on the filtering screen, we can see detailed information such as whether it is in Progress, the date and time the restore process started, and which user started it.
While the Restore Task is active, when we perform the LOGIN operation on Outlook, a folder named Recovered Items – 2024-02-25 16:16 is created and I can see that my mail items have arrived according to the restore point I have selected.
Since the mailbox size I selected was small, the restore process was completed quickly and we can see that it is Completed in the Task section.
In this article, we enabled Microsoft Syntex and enabled our policies for Microsoft 365 Backup and provided a restore process. Since Microsoft 365 Backup is currently still in preview, the sections, limits and features I mentioned here may change in the coming days. I hope it was useful.
